2. Chiatura Soviet Cable Car Stations – Chiatura, Imereti — 1954 Network, 17 Lines, Cliff-Face Stations, Pioneer Palace, 4 Abandoned Hospitals, 1.5 hrs from Kutaisi (Known Location)
The Cable Car Network in Chiatura is a remarkable and rusty relic of the Soviet era. Built to connect the steep mining town to the surrounding manganese-rich hillsides, this network was a part of daily life for the region's workers. In 1954, engineers installed a new aerial ropeway system. Over the following years, workers built up to 17 lines, some carrying ore as well as people. Chiatura is known for its gravity-defying cable cars, brutalist architecture, and abandoned hospitals tucked into dramatic cliffs. 3. Laguna Vere – Tbilisi — Soviet Olympic Aquatic Centre 1978, Pool Filled with Wild Plants, Spectacular Soviet Mosaics Exterior, Heart of Capital City
Former Central Aquatic Sports Center/Laguna Vere (completed 1978) was once the most extravagant swimming center in Soviet Georgia. The structure is best known for the colorful mosaics lining its exterior, but the interior is equally impressive, with modernist diving towers and brutal bleachers reaching as far as the eye can see. But where there was once chlorinated water, now is only rogue weeds growing as high as the pool's edge. Laguna Vere is 15 minutes' walk from Rustaveli Avenue in central Tbilisi — the Soviet mosaic exterior is photographable from the street. The interior is locked and guarded. 5. Kombinati Workers' District – Gori — Soviet Factory Town, Pink Tuff Stone Workers' Housing, Derelict Industrial Buildings, Stalinist Architecture, Stalin's Birthplace City (Carte Urbex Exclusive)
The Kombinati is the old factory district on the western side of the river in Gori. Row upon row of two-storey pink tuff stone buildings — a purpose-built workers' district with plenty of socialist-style architecture and a very austere Concert Hall. Apparently there are a lot of abandoned buildings in this district.
