The Monte Palace Hotel opened in April 1989 at the Vista do Rei viewpoint above the Lagoa das Sete Cidades as the first five-star hotel in the Azores. It had 88 rooms including a presidential suite, two restaurants, a nightclub, conference rooms and boutiques. It was awarded Portugal's finest hotel the same week it closed its doors for good in November 1990 — abandoned after just 18 months due to persistent fog, insufficient guests and unsustainable debts. Security guards patrolled until 2011, after which the building was abandoned to vandalism.

2. Valflores Palace – Santa Iria de Azóia, Near Lisbon — 16th-Century Renaissance Manor 1532–1558, Europa Nostra Endangered 2015, Roofless Shell, Tagus Estuary Setting (Known Location)
Valflores Palace is a fine example of 16th-century residential architecture built between 1532 and 1558 by Jorge de Barros, head of the Portuguese trading post in Flanders. Despite its classification as a Property of Public Interest, it is today in a pitiful state and at risk of collapsing — the roof had to be replaced by a metal protective structure. Most of the ten arches and Tuscan columns of the loggia in the south facade have collapsed and there are serious cracks in the vaults of the ground floor. Europa Nostra placed it on the list of the 14 most endangered monuments in Europe in 2015.
