Our Secret Expedition to Baikonur: Discovering the Abandoned Buran Shuttles

In the heart of the vast Kazakh steppes, near the still active cosmodrome of Baikonur, sleep two shuttles Buran and their launcher Energia. Fascinated by these remnants of a bygone era, we decided to set out on an expedition to find these relics buried in a highly secured Russian base.

A Perilous Expedition in Forbidden Land

The adventure begins with a a three-day journey across Kazakhstan, of Kyzylorda to Baikonur. Our objective is clear: to sneak into the Russian space base, still active, without being detected.

  • To avoid Russian patrols, we waited the night before setting off.

  • A journey 30 kilometers on foot through the Kazakh steppes was necessary to approach the base.

  • We had to enter before sunrise to maximize our discretion.

The approach was meticulously planned. Once on site, we used underground tunnels to avoid being spotted by the guards posted around the area.

Objective 1: The Energia Launcher

The first mission was a success. We managed to reach a huge warehouse housing the legendary Energia launcher, a rocket designed to compete with the greatest American space projects. But the tension rose: a Russian patrol suddenly entered the building.

  • We had to hide for two hours in a corner of the hangar to avoid any detection.

  • Once the danger was cleared, we decided to continue our expedition.

Objective 2: The Buran Shuttles

On the second day, we continued our quest and took again the underground passages to reach the hangar housing two abandoned Buran shuttles.

  • These shuttles were the Soviet equivalent of the American space shuttle.

  • The program was abandoned after the collapse of the USSR, leaving these ships abandoned in an advanced state of decay.

Access to the hangar was a a true dive into the past. Dust covered the hulls of the ships, and the remnants of Soviet engineering offered us a striking spectacle.

Final Objective: Leave the BaseĀ

The exploration was coming to an end. After capturing our discovery, we now had to leave the base without being spotted.

  • Caution was necessary to avoid arousing suspicion from patrols.

  • The return journey was as challenging as the way there, with a long tense walk.

We finally managed to leave the restricted area without incident, carrying with us unique images and memories of one of the greatest forgotten space projects.

The Buran shuttles and the Energia launcher are silent witnesses to an unfinished Soviet dream. Today, these abandoned relics spark the curiosity of explorers and history enthusiasts. Our adventure reminds us that even in oblivion, humanity’s great ambitions leave indelible marks.
