Our Secret Expedition in Armenia: Discovering the Abandoned ROT-54 Telescope
In the heart of the remote mountains of northern Armenia lies a titanic relic of the Soviet era: the ROT-54 telescope, a colossal 54-meter diameter astronomical radar, once used to track satellites, analyze deep space, and monitor the skies during the Cold War. Fascinated by this forgotten giant, we decided to undertake a clandestine expedition to this isolated and officially off-limits site.
An Expedition to a Forgotten Colossus
It all begins with a long journey through Armenia, from Yerevan to the misty plateaus near the former scientific base where the ROT-54 rests. Our goal is simple: reach the telescope without attracting the attention of the local guards who still watch the area.
Arriving near the base, we bypassed the main paths and crossed old technical ditches to avoid being spotted by the few patrols still roaming the area.
Objective 1: The Base of the Telescope
Our first mission was to reach the main structure of the ROT-54. In the distance, the silhouette of the telescope appeared: a huge circular antenna, abandoned, tilted toward the sky as if frozen in a last breath.
Objective 2: Reach the Upper Platform
This telescope was designed to rival the most advanced American radars. Today, only fragments of this excessive ambition remain: twisted panels, gutted communication systems, half-erased Soviet inscriptions.
In the absolute silence, you can almost hear the echoes of the space race.
Final Objective: Leave the Area Without Being Detected
After several hours documenting every detail, comes the most delicate moment: leaving quietly.
The ROT-54 will remain one of the most impressive places we have explored.
A symbol of Soviet ambition, abandoned but still majestic, frozen in an almost cosmic solitude.
