Many urbexeurs are interested in heritage issues and believe that urbex, under certain conditions, helps to preserve the history and memory of sites. Sometimes urban explorations help to save or report abandoned documentary archives.
For others, it is about mastering the modern city and its behind-the-scenes. Photography and video are also important motivations. Groups often form around one of these practices. In France more than elsewhere, practitioners tend to specialize strongly: some only explore the catacombs, others only rooftops or metro visits.
