Vidzeme north and east of Riga is Latvia's manor country — the heartland of the Baltic German aristocracy whose estates were expropriated in 1920 (Latvian land reform), collectivized in 1940 (Soviet occupation) and returned without resources in 1991. The Cesvaine Palace, the largest neo-Gothic palace in Latvia, is the most famous abandoned heritage site in the region — partially burned, partially restored, freely accessible. Zone 4: Zemgale — The Agricultural Plain

The Daugavpils fortress, a 19th-century Russian Imperial fortification the size of a small city, is the most significant abandoned heritage site in Latgale. Soviet-era industrial sites, abandoned Orthodox churches and the specific abandonment of Latvia's most economically deprived region make Latgale the most underexplored urbex territory in the country.
Best Time of Year for Urbex in Latvia
Spring (April-May): the best overall season — snow gone, forest roads open, vegetation not yet blocking access. The manor ruins in Vidzeme are most accessible before the summer undergrowth closes in.
Autumn (September-October): the second-best window — the birch and aspen forest turns extraordinary colors, the tourist season is over and the Kurzeme coast is at its most atmospheric. Skrunda-1 in October is one of the most evocative ghost town images in the Baltic.
Winter (December-February): Latvia in winter is cold (-10 to -20°C possible) but the snow transforms the manor ruins and Soviet concrete into images of exceptional power. Forest roads can be impassable without 4x4.
Summer (June-August): long days but maximum vegetation; Jūrmala and the coastal sites are busy with tourists. Dawn and dusk exploration only for the most atmospheric results.
Getting Around Latvia for Urbex
A car is essential — Latvia's best urbex sites are scattered across the country and public transport reaches very few of them. Distances are manageable: Riga to Liepāja is 3 hours, Riga to Daugavpils is 3.5 hours, Riga to the Estonian border is 2.5 hours. Road quality is good on main routes; forest tracks to rural sites require higher-clearance vehicles in spring.
