Our Secret Expedition to Baikonur: Discovering the Abandoned Buran Shuttles
In the heart of the vast steppes of Kazakhstan, near the still-active Baikonur Cosmodrome , lie two Buran space shuttles and their Energia launch vehicle . Fascinated by these relics of a bygone era, we decided to embark on an expedition to find these buried artifacts in a highly secure Russian base.
A Perilous Expedition into Forbidden Land
The adventure begins with a three-day journey across Kazakhstan , from Kyzylorda to Baikonur . Our objective is clear: to clandestinely infiltrate the still-active Russian spaceport without being detected.
-
To avoid Russian patrols, we waited until nightfall before setting off.
-
A 30-kilometer trek on foot across the Kazakh steppes was necessary to approach the base.
-
We needed to enter before sunrise to maximize our discretion.
The approach was meticulously planned. Once there, we used underground tunnels to avoid being spotted by the guards posted around the area.

Objective 1: The Energia Launcher
The first mission was a success. We managed to reach a huge warehouse housing the legendary Energia launcher , a rocket designed to rival the biggest American space projects. But tensions rose: a Russian patrol suddenly entered the building.
-
We had to hide for two hours in a corner of the hangar to avoid detection.
-
Once the danger was eliminated, we decided to continue our expedition.

Objective 2: The Buran Shuttles
On the second day, we continued our quest and again used the underground passages to reach the hangar housing two abandoned Buran shuttles .
-
These shuttles were the Soviet equivalent of the American space shuttle project.
-
The program was abandoned after the collapse of the USSR , leaving these vessels derelict in an advanced state of deterioration.
Access to the hangar was a true plunge into the past . Dust covered the hulls of the ships, and the remnants of Soviet engineering offered us a striking spectacle.

Final Objective: Leave the Base
The exploration was drawing to a close. After immortalizing our discovery, we now had to leave the base undetected .
-
Caution was advised so as not to arouse the suspicions of the patrols.
-
The return journey was just as arduous as the outward journey, with a long, tense walk.
We finally managed to leave the restricted area without incident , taking with us unique images and memories of one of the greatest forgotten space projects.
The Buran space shuttles and the Energia rocket stand as silent witnesses to an unfulfilled Soviet dream. Today, these abandoned relics pique the curiosity of explorers and history enthusiasts. Our adventure reminds us that, even in oblivion, humanity's grand ambitions leave indelible marks.
