URBEX CHERNOBYL

Discover Chernobyl: A dive into nuclear history

The Chernobyl disaster of April 1986 remains one of the worst nuclear disasters of all time, leaving thousands dead and entire regions devastated. Today, despite its danger, this place attracts more than 10,000 visitors per year, thanks in part to Dark Tourism encouraged by the Ukrainian government. The American series "Chernobyl" has also contributed to a significant increase in these visits.

Located 150 km north of kyiv, the VI Lenin nuclear power plant was built along the Pripyat River, with four reactors commissioned between 1977 and 1983. The city of Pripyat, built to house the plant's workers, was hyper-modern and home to around 49,000 people in the mid-1980s, with a multitude of modern amenities.

Chernobyl's Must-See Spots

1. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

A symbol of Soviet engineering, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant employed nearly 10,000 workers. Reactors 1 and 2 were commissioned in 1977, followed by reactors 3 and 4 in 1981 and 1983 respectively. The 1986 disaster put an end to the construction of two other reactors.

2. The Ghost Town of Pripyat

Built in the 1970s to house the plant's workers, Pripyat was a modern city with a population of around 49,000 at the time of the disaster. Today it lies abandoned and frozen in time, offering a striking glimpse into Soviet life in the 1980s.

3. The Chernobyl Museum

Located in kyiv, this museum traces the history of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster through interactive exhibits and artifacts recovered from the site.

4. The Liquidators' Memorial

Dedicated to the liquidators – the people responsible for cleaning up and decontaminating the disaster – this memorial pays tribute to their courage and sacrifice.

Conclusion

Chernobyl remains a place steeped in history and tragedy, but also a poignant testament to the destructive power of nuclear energy. Guided tours provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the events leading up to the disaster and its lasting impact on the region and its people.
